1st May is celebrated all over the world as International Workers’ Day or Labour Day.
It is a special day dedicated to workers and their contributions to society. This day reminds us of the importance
of labour and the dignity of every worker.
Labour Day has its roots in the 19th century during the Industrial Revolution. At that time, workers had to work
for very long hours in difficult conditions. Many workers demanded an eight-hour workday and better working conditions.
A major turning point was the Haymarket incident in Chicago in 1886. Workers organized a protest for their rights,
which later turned violent. This event became an important symbol of the labour movement.
In 1889, an international organization declared 1st May as Labour Day to honour workers and their struggles.
Since then, it has been celebrated across the world.
In India, Labour Day was first celebrated in 1923 in Chennai. It was organized to support workers’ rights
and to spread awareness about fair wages and working conditions.
Today, Labour Day is observed with rallies, speeches, and events. Workers are honoured, and discussions
are held on labour laws and welfare.
Labour Day is important for many reasons:
1. Respect for Workers: It recognizes the hard work of people in every field.
2. Awareness of Rights: It reminds people about fair wages and safe working conditions.
3. Equality: It teaches that all types of work are important.
4. Unity: It encourages workers to stand together for their rights.
Workers play a very important role in nation-building. Farmers grow food, teachers educate students,
doctors save lives, and labourers build roads and buildings. Without workers, society cannot function properly.
Even today, many workers face problems such as unemployment, low wages, and unsafe working conditions.
Many people work in the informal sector without proper protection or benefits.
Technology is also changing the nature of jobs. While it creates new opportunities, it also replaces
some traditional jobs.
1st May is not just a holiday but a day of respect and awareness. It reminds us to value every worker
and treat them with dignity. We should always support fairness and equality in the workplace.
