Life and Teachings of Socrates

Socrates was one of the most influential thinkers in human history, even though he never wrote a single book. He was born around 469 BCE in Athens, Greece. His father, Sophroniscus, was a stonemason, and his mother, Phaenarete, was a midwife. Socrates often compared his own work to his mother’s profession, saying he helped people “give birth” to ideas through questioning.

He lived simply and cared little for wealth, status, or physical comfort. Instead, he spent his days in public places like marketplaces and gymnasiums, talking with citizens, students, politicians, and craftsmen. Socrates believed that true wisdom came from recognizing one’s own ignorance. His famous statement, “I know that I know nothing,” reflects this attitude.

Socrates developed a unique method of teaching, now called the Socratic Method. He asked a series of questions to challenge assumptions and expose contradictions in people’s thinking. This approach often made others uncomfortable, especially those who claimed to be wise or powerful.

Although he questioned authority, Socrates was loyal to Athens. He served as a soldier during the Peloponnesian War and showed courage and discipline in battle. However, his constant questioning earned him many enemies.

In 399 BCE, Socrates was put on trial. He was charged with corrupting the youth of Athens and not believing in the city’s gods. During his trial, he defended his life and philosophy openly, refusing to beg for mercy or change his beliefs. The jury found him guilty and sentenced him to death.

Socrates accepted the verdict calmly. He believed that escaping punishment would be unjust and would go against the laws of Athens. He died by drinking poison hemlock, surrounded by his students. His death turned him into a symbol of moral courage and commitment to truth.

Most of what we know about Socrates comes from his students, especially Plato and Xenophon. Through their writings, Socrates lives on as a model of critical thinking, ethical inquiry, and the belief that “the unexamined life is not worth living.”

Here are some of the most famous and meaningful quotes attributed to Socrates. They reflect his focus on wisdom, self-knowledge, ethics, and truth.

1. “The unexamined life is not worth living.”

2. “I know that I know nothing.”

3. “True wisdom comes to each of us when we realize how little we understand about life, ourselves, and the world.”

4. “To find yourself, think for yourself.”

5. “Wisdom begins in wonder.”

6. “Be as you wish to seem.”

7. “He who is not contented with what he has would not be contented with what he would like to have.”

8. “Strong minds discuss ideas, average minds discuss events, weak minds discuss people.”
(Traditionally attributed to Socrates, though debated by scholars.)

9. “Education is the kindling of a flame, not the filling of a vessel.”

10. “There is only one good, knowledge, and one evil, ignorance.”
