The Cheraman Juma Masjid is believed to have been built by Malik Dinar, one of the first followers of Islam to reach the Indian subcontinent. The story begins with Cheraman Perumal, a powerful Chera king who ruled much of present-day Kerala.
🌙 The King’s Dream and Conversion:
According to legend, Cheraman Perumal witnessed a miraculous event—the splitting of the moon, which is believed to be one of the miracles of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Intrigued and spiritually moved, the king consulted Arab traders and scholars, who informed him about Islam and its Prophet.
Eventually, the king traveled to Mecca, where he is said to have embraced Islam and taken the name Tajuddin. Before his death in Arabia, he instructed his entourage to return to his kingdom and spread the new faith.

One of the king’s companions, Malik Dinar, carried out this wish. He arrived in Kerala with other followers and was warmly welcomed by local rulers and communities.
Malik Dinar and his followers established several mosques along the Malabar Coast, and the first among them was the Cheraman Juma Masjid, built in Kodungallur.
