Modals – Rules, Questions & Answers (Class X)

Basic Rule of Modals

Rule: Modal + base form of verb (no s, no to)

Example: He can play. (❌ can plays)


1. Can / Could (Ability, Permission, Request)

Q1. He ___ swim very fast. (can / could / may / must)

Answer: can swim

Rule: Can + base verb (ability)

Explanation: Shows present ability.

Hindi: वह बहुत तेज़ तैर सकता है।

Q2. ___ you help me? (Can / Must / Should / Might)

Answer: Can

Rule: Can is used for request.

Explanation: Polite request.

Hindi: क्या आप मेरी मदद कर सकते हैं?

Q3. She ___ speak English when she was five. (can / could / may / will)

Answer: could speak

Rule: Could = past ability

Hindi: वह पाँच साल की उम्र में अंग्रेज़ी बोल सकती थी।


2. May / Might (Permission, Possibility)

Q4. May I ___ your pen? (use / used / using / uses)

Answer: use

Rule: May for formal permission

Hindi: क्या मैं आपकी कलम इस्तेमाल कर सकता हूँ?

Q5. It ___ rain today. (can / may / must / shall)

Answer: may rain

Rule: May shows possibility

Hindi: आज बारिश हो सकती है।

Q6. He ___ come late. (might / must / will / should)

Answer: might come

Rule: Might = weak possibility

Hindi: वह देर से आ सकता है।


3. Must (Obligation / Compulsion)

Q7. You ___ obey your parents. (may / must / can / could)

Answer: must obey

Rule: Must shows strong duty

Hindi: तुम्हें अपने माता-पिता की आज्ञा माननी ही चाहिए।

Q8. Students ___ wear uniform. (must / might / could / would)

Answer: must wear

Hindi: छात्रों को यूनिफॉर्म पहननी चाहिए।


4. Shall / Should (Suggestion, Advice)

Q9. Shall we ___ for a walk? (go / went / going / goes)

Answer: go

Rule: Shall + I/We for suggestion

Hindi: क्या हम टहलने चलें?

Q10. You ___ respect your teachers. (must / should / can / may)

Answer: should respect

Rule: Should gives advice

Hindi: तुम्हें अपने शिक्षकों का सम्मान करना चाहिए।


5. Will / Would (Future, Polite Request)

Q11. I ___ help you tomorrow. (will / would / can / may)

Answer: will help

Rule: Will for future action

Hindi: मैं कल तुम्हारी मदद करूँगा।

Q12. Would you ___ the door, please? (open / opened / opening / opens)

Answer: open

Rule: Would for polite request

Hindi: कृपया दरवाज़ा खोल देंगे?


6. Ought to / Need / Dare

Q13. We ___ help the poor. (ought to / can / may / dare)

Answer: ought to help

Rule: Ought to = moral duty

Hindi: हमें गरीबों की मदद करनी चाहिए।

Q14. You ___ not worry. (need / dare / must / could)

Answer: need not worry

Rule: Need not = no necessity

Hindi: तुम्हें चिंता करने की ज़रूरत नहीं है।

Q15. He ___ not speak against his teacher. (dare / need / should / might)

Answer: dare not speak

Rule: Dare shows courage

Hindi: वह अपने शिक्षक के खिलाफ बोलने की हिम्मत नहीं करता।
